Erice Cable Car

The Erice Cable Car was inaugurated in 2005, restoring a direct aerial connection between Trapani and Erice after more than two decades without service. It follows the route of the original cable car, which opened in 1956 as the first aerial cableway in Sicily before closing during the 1970s. Constructed to improve access to Erice while reducing traffic on the winding mountain road, the modern system has become an important part of the area's transport infrastructure for both residents and visitors.

The line extends for just over three kilometres, climbing approximately 700 metres from the foothills of Monte Erice to the historic town. Operating as an automatic monocable gondola, it provides a fast and efficient route between the coast and the summit while revealing the dramatic topography that has shaped Erice's history as a naturally defended hilltop settlement. Throughout the ascent, passengers enjoy wide views across the Trapani peninsula, the Egadi Islands and the surrounding coastline.

Today the cable car operates throughout most of the year, providing convenient access to Erice's historic centre and reducing the need for private vehicles on the mountain road. Beyond its practical role, it has become one of the most recognisable ways to experience the relationship between the medieval town, Monte Erice and the coastal landscape of western Sicily.
